Julius Caesar *2007*
by William Shakespeare

Director Dee Evans | Designer Sara Perks

On a night “that thunders, lightens, opens graves and roars”, with fire dropping from the sky, and prophecies of doom abounding, a plot unfolds to assassinate Julius Caesar whose towering ambition threatens the republic as he moves towards seizing supreme power.
But the conspirators have different motives. Honourable principles, friendship, and the interests of the people collide with deadly envy and political spin. Brutal betrayal and murder plunge Rome into civil war.
Directed by Mercury Theatre Company Artistic Director Dee Evans (Twelfth Night, Devil’s Advocate) and played entirely by women, the production will explore the relationship between power and gender.
It has been done before and worked very well.
The Globe presented an all female cast for Richard III:
“It is a pleasure to be able to report that a violent play about a loathsome man can be cast entirely for women and work perfectly from the first line… gender is never an issue”
The British Theatre Guide review by Philip Fisher
